The Bolshevik revolution, 1917-1918;: Documents and materials,

THE MATERIALS of this book tell the story of how the Bolsheviks
seIzed the power 111 RussIa and kept It durIng the first SIX
months of their rule. The story is told in the language of
decrees, manifestos, and other public documents, in the words of par-
ticipants and observers, and in the reports of the contemporary press.
This volume follows chronologically the Documents of Russian Hitory,
1914-1917, published by the late Professor Frank A. Golder, and con-
stitutes a part of a collection of materials on the Russian Revolution
planned by him and made possible through his initiative. It has been
necessary to revise his original plan, but in carrying out this revision,
I have attempted to reach the objectives which Mr. Golder had in mind.
If, therefore, this and the other volumes now in preparation contribute to
the knowledge and understanding of one of the great historical move-
ments of this age, the credit belongs to him. While this volume has been
in preparation materials have been selected and translated which relate
to civil war, intervention, and war communism in European Russia;
the revolution, civil war, and intervention in Siberia and the Russian
Far East; the origins of the Third International; the revolution and the
